Creative service through technology

BroWood Digital Project

I use thoughtful websites and web apps to solve practical problems, widen access, and help people doing meaningful work keep their resources focused on the community.

The work behind the work

Building what service makes possible

Organizations doing vital work should not have to choose between a high-quality digital presence and directing their limited funds toward the people they serve. I have created these projects free of charge or, in rare cases, well below cost.

Some are complete community resources. Others are proofs of concept that help an organization see what is possible before taking the idea forward. In each case, I listen for the real need, simplify what is confusing, and build with dignity and purpose.

It is Beautifully Rewarding to Use Technology to Give Back to My Community

Below are examples of websites and web applications I have built for organizations, community initiatives, and causes that I believe deserve access to high-quality technology without having to sacrifice valuable resources that could otherwise be used to serve the community.

Professional websites and web applications can easily cost thousands of dollars to design, develop, maintain, and update. For many small organizations, nonprofits, community groups, and grassroots initiatives, that creates a difficult choice: invest significant funds into a website, or preserve those funds for the people and programs they exist to serve.

I have tried to help bridge that gap.

When I see a problem within my community that I believe technology could help solve, I often build a solution myself. Sometimes that solution becomes an actual resource. Other times, I build a proof of concept simply to demonstrate what could be possible.

Youth Accountability · Proof of Concept

Fond du Lac Community

A community-service resource designed to help young people take meaningful responsibility while protecting family privacy.

As a School Resource Officer, I saw an important gap in how students could be held accountable for behavior that warranted a citation. Financial penalties often placed the burden on parents or guardians rather than the young person, and some families simply could not afford the fine. Over time, that consequence could lose its ability to redirect behavior toward success.

I had advocated for the return of community-service options for years. When a limited version returned, students and families still had to find opportunities on their own without a central list or a practical way to track hours. I created Fond du Lac Community as a proof of concept that a private organization or nonprofit could adopt at no cost, or use as inspiration for its own system.

The concept respects FERPA rights and does not collect student data. Saving and tracking service logs remain the responsibility of the individual. A local nonprofit has since taken up the work and is developing its own version with ideas shaped through conversations among community stakeholders.

Preparedness · Education

School Safety Guider

A concise preparedness resource built to make critical school-safety guidance easier to learn, recall, and use.

I often build simple websites as proofs of concept when an organization needs inspiration to see what is possible. This allows me to serve as a pro bono organizational consultant, using technology to simplify challenges that can otherwise feel overwhelming.

I created School Safety Guider with the hope of helping the thousands of teachers and staff members who train each year for active-threat response. As a member of the Fond du Lac School District Crisis Response Team, I have worked purposefully to learn about active-threat and critical-incident response, then help strengthen district techniques, drills, audits, and education year after year.

School professionals are devoted and highly educated, yet vital information can be scattered across guidelines, studies, standards, policies, and white papers. During a crisis, stress narrows attention while staff members carry many responsibilities at once. This resource brings essential direction into a clear, accessible format that supports daily learning and more confident decisions during an emergency.

School Operations · Safety

School Monitor Bell Times

A practical web app for understanding the school day at a glance, from class blocks to passing periods.

I created School Monitor to simplify bell-time management, hallway monitoring, and passing-time awareness for school staff and School Resource Officers. The app shows the current education period or block, how much time remains, and how much passing time is left between classes.

Hallway monitoring directly supports both safety and learning. When students are consistently out of class, truancy can become a safety concern, and every missed period also means lost instruction. A clear shared view of the schedule helps staff respond consistently while keeping students connected to their education.

Digital Safety · Education

Internet Safety Guider

A practical digital-safety resource built on real School Resource Officer experience, helping young people make informed decisions online.

As a School Resource Officer, I spend my days alongside students, and I see how quickly the online world shapes their choices, their confidence, and their safety. Internet Safety Guider grew out of the presentations I give in classrooms and community settings, where I work to make digital-safety concepts clear, honest, and age-appropriate.

The resource is built on a simple principle: Informed Decision Making. When young people understand how their information travels, who can see it, and how quickly a single post can change a life, they are better equipped to protect themselves and one another. Rather than relying on fear, the material gives students and families practical steps they can use right away, from protecting personal information to recognizing risky conversations and reporting concerns to a trusted adult.

Like my other BroWood Digital Project work, this site is offered as a proof of concept that an organization, school district, or nonprofit can adopt or adapt at no cost. My hope is that it sparks conversations in homes and classrooms and helps the next generation navigate the digital world with confidence and care.

Wellness · Readiness

BroWood Fitness

Straightforward circuit-training support for people who want to stay strong, capable, and ready to protect others.

I built BroWood Fitness to make working out and circuit training simpler. Good fitness guidance should reduce friction, help people begin, and make it easier to keep moving without turning every session into another complicated task.

The project has a special connection to those who protect children and serve the community. Physical readiness supports resilience, confidence, and the ability to respond when others need help. This web app keeps the focus on practical movement and consistent effort.

Faith · Community Care

Bread of Life

Donated digital support for a small congregation whose ministry reaches far beyond its size.

I created this project for a local organization with a small congregation and a large ministry. Their time and resources belong in the work of serving people, not in choosing between an expensive website and the direct needs of their community.

The site was built to help further that work and make the ministry easier to discover, with a particular focus on blessing people in need. It reflects why I take on this kind of digital work: worthy organizations deserve a dignified presence that supports, rather than competes with, their mission.

Family · Memorial

Dear Jerome

A quiet memorial space created so family and loved ones can continue sharing their words with Jerome.

I created Dear Jerome in honor of my brother, Jerome Robert Smith, who passed away on April 21, 2021, after an unexpected series of health issues.

The site gives our family, his children, and the people who loved him a place to write small notes of love and remembrance. It lets them see the affection others continue to hold for Jerome as a brother, father, son, and friend. This project is personal, gentle, and rooted in the belief that love deserves a place to remain visible.

One purpose, many forms

Creativity can be an act of service

From public safety and education to family, faith, wellness, and remembrance, each project began with a different need. They are connected by one belief: the tools we know how to build should help people care for one another.
